Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and Houston Texans football star Jonathan Owens have had a whirlwind romance. The dynamic duo went from lovestruck sweethearts to husband and wife in just a couple years, but while their love story has seemed picture-perfect on the outside, it hasn\u2019t been without some struggles. Everything seemed to be smooth sailing for the pair after they first linked up in 2020 \u2014 and they have more than enough lovey-dovey Instagram posts<\/a> detailing their head-over-heels romance \u2014 but there\u2019s been a bit of backlash recently.<\/p>\n Considering both 26-year-old Biles and 28-year-old Owens are world-class athletes killing it in their respective sports, it\u2019s no shocker that they gravitated toward each other. Owens told Texas Monthly<\/em><\/a> <\/em>Biles\u2019 grind as an athlete is \u201cintoxicating,\u201d and Biles can\u2019t stop gushing herself<\/a>. \u201cHe’s always so supportive,\u201d she confessed to People <\/em>in June 2021. \u201cHe’s the best because he also goes through it [as an athlete], so he knows exactly how it is in the process. It’s been amazing to have him.\u201d<\/p>\n But the couple has had some rough times, too. Although their love for each other has always been strong, they did face some backlash in December 2023 after Owens made comments about their relationship on a podcast. Here\u2019s the full tea on how Biles and Owens got together and went from each other\u2019s biggest cheerleaders to loved-up life partners.<\/p>\n Ah, March 2020 \u2014 the end of normalcy, but the beginning of Owens and Biles\u2019 relationship, which kicked off after the two first matched on Raya. \u201cWe ended up hanging out right before the pandemic,\u201d Owens revealed in a June 2021 interview<\/a> with Texas Monthly<\/em>. \u201cIt was one of the few times in her life where everything was just shut off and she couldn\u2019t do anything. So we used it to get to know each other \u2014 really get to know each other. It created our bond and made it stronger. Now I\u2019m so thankful.”<\/p>\n Interestingly enough, Owens claims he had no idea his future GF was as big of a deal as she is. He just thought she was \u201cpretty good\u201d at gymnastics, but Biles *loved* Owens\u2019 cluelessness, apparently. <\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t know who she was,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI just hadn\u2019t heard of her, and when I told her that, that\u2019s one of the things she liked.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s not totally clear when Biles and Owens exited the talking stage and entered official BF-GF territory, but the power couple went Instagram official<\/a> with the cutest selfie ever in August 2020.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s just us,\u201d Biles captioned the post (throwing in a brown heart for good measure). Owens replied with four red hearts, marking the beginning of an era \u2014 aka Biles and Owens\u2019 love for posting adorable snaps of each other regularly.<\/p>\n Biles and Owens already proved themselves to be madly in love with one another before the ~month of love~, but their all-out Valentine\u2019s Day celebration<\/a> reaffirmed how mutually obsessed the sweethearts were.<\/p>\n On IG, Biles posted pics<\/a> of her and her man smooching by an extravagant balloon and lights display. Her Insta story at the time also revealed they shared a romantic dinner for two, along with a bedspread topped with roses that said \u201cI \u2665\ufe0f U.\u201d <\/p>\n March 2021 marked a full year since Biles and Owens first connected, and the month also marked Biles\u2019 24th birthday. (Yup, she\u2019s a Pisces babe<\/a>!) So what better way to celebrate than with a couples\u2019 trip to the tropics? After 365 days of romance, the lovebirds jetted off to Belize, one of Biles\u2019 favorite places in the world \u2014 she even holds citizenship<\/a> in the Central American country thanks to her biological mother<\/a>, who grew up there.<\/p>\n She captioned one of the numerous photos<\/a> she posted of her and Owens on vacay: \u201cI love you more than I love Belize and that’s a lot.\u201d <\/p>\n As the pandemic became increasingly manageable and outside opened up again, couples who cuffed up during lockdown finally got the opportunity to experience life\u2019s biggest moments together. For Owens and Biles, that meant watching each other conquer their sports. But in June 2021, Owens *at last* had the opportunity to see his GOAT girlfriend do her thing IRL<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat an amazing experience \ud83d\udc4f\ud83c\udffd,\u201d he said in an IG post of him and Biles<\/a> post-competition. \u201cFirst time getting to watch you compete in person and you didn\u2019t disappoint. It\u2019s so cool that I get to watch you do what you love, and be the best at that\u203c\ufe0f I\u2019m so proud of you my lil champ \ud83e\udd70\u2764\ufe0f Trials up next and you already know I\u2019m there!! Love you baby \u2764\ufe0f\u2764\ufe0f\u201d<\/p>\n It took less than two years of dating for Biles and Owens to know they\u2019d found their perfect matches. Biles announced the engagement on Instagram<\/a> on Feb. 15, 2022. \u201cTHE EASIEST YES,\u201d she wrote under pics of the proposal. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to spend forever & ever with you, you\u2019re everything I dreamed of and more! let\u2019s get married FIANC\u00c9.\u201d<\/p>\n Owens and Biles became husband and wife on April 22, 2023. Biles shared a bunch of photos of the intimate courthouse ceremony<\/a>, captioning the romantic pics, \u201cOfficially Owens.\u201d<\/p>\n The official wedding ceremony may have been small, but Biles and Owens made up for it a couple weeks later by throwing a big, destination wedding<\/a> with all their friends and family in Cabo, Mexico.<\/p>\n After three and a half years of the picture-perfect romance, there was bound to be some struggles eventually. On Dec. 19, Owens appeared on an episode of The Pivot<\/em> podcast<\/a>, where he spoke about how his relationship with Biles began and how he views their dynamic.<\/p>\n When asked how he \u201cpulled\u201d Biles, Owens responded, \u201cIt\u2019s really how\u2019d she pull me, man.\u201d He went on to say he sees himself as \u201cthe catch\u201d in the relationship, and reiterated the point he\u2019s made before about how he had no clue who Biles was prior to dating her. \u201cI never really paid attention to gymnastics,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n The comments didn\u2019t sit well with fans on social media<\/a>, and amid the backlash, users dug up old tweets of Owens\u2019 during the 2012 Olympics<\/a>, which confirmed he did have an interest in Olympic gymnastics years before he met Biles.<\/p>\n But Biles remained unbothered by the backlash. \u201cAre y\u2019all done yet?<\/a>\u201d she posted after a couple days of the social media uproar.<\/p>\n To really send her point home, Biles shared a romantic photo kissing Owens<\/a> in front of their Christmas tree on Dec. 25.
